Early Math Skills for Preschoolers
What Children Learn Before Addition

Early maths is not just about remembering numbers. It is about helping children notice differences, recognise patterns, compare objects and understand how numbers relate to the world around them.
A child who counts three apples, notices that one tower is taller than another or sorts blocks by colour is already beginning to develop important mathematical thinking skills.

THE REAL FOUNDATION

Maths Begins Before Addition

Have you ever noticed your child counting toys, comparing the sizes of two objects or asking for one more biscuit? These everyday moments can become wonderful opportunities to explore early maths.
Preschoolers develop these skills through repetition, hands-on experiences, conversations and play. They do not need to spend long hours completing worksheets to become familiar with mathematical concepts.
Every child learns at a different pace. The aim is to make maths meaningful, enjoyable and connected to the things children see and do every day.

EARLY LEARNING

Why Are Early Math Skills Important Before Addition?

Imagine asking a child to solve 2 + 3 without helping them understand what two objects or three objects look like. They may memorise the answer, but they might not understand the idea behind it.
Early maths helps children build that understanding before moving towards formal calculations.
When children count objects, compare quantities and group similar items, they begin to recognise how numbers work. These experiences also encourage logical thinking, observation, memory and problem-solving.
The goal is not to rush children into sums. It is to help them understand numbers through experiences they can see, touch and explore.

THE EARLY MATH SKILLS PLAN

Simple Activities to Build Maths Readiness

You do not need expensive learning materials to introduce early maths at home. Toys, building blocks, household objects and everyday routines provide plenty of opportunities for children to explore numbers and patterns.

01

Count Everyday Objects

Touch, Count, Discover

💠Invite your child to count toys, spoons, crayons or pieces of fruit. Encourage them to touch or move each object as they say the numbers.
Start with small groups and gradually introduce larger quantities when your child is ready.

02

Sort Toys by Colour and Shape

Look Closely, Find Similarities

💠Give your child a collection of blocks, toy cars or large coloured objects. Ask them to group the items according to one feature, such as colour, shape or size.
Once they understand the activity, introduce a different way to sort the same objects.

03

Play More or Less

Compare, Think, Understand

💠Place two small groups of objects in front of your child. Ask which group has more, which has fewer or whether both groups have the same number.
Let your child count the objects if they need help deciding.

Parents do not need to be maths teachers to help children develop early number skills. Simple conversations and everyday activities can make a real difference.

Make counting part of daily life

Count toys, fruits, steps or other familiar objects together. Allow your child to touch each object while counting.

Ask questions instead of giving every answer

Try questions such as “Which tower is taller?” or “What do you think comes next?” Give your child time to observe and respond.

Use real objects before worksheets

Blocks, toys, cups and picture cards help children see and touch the quantities they are learning about.

Keep learning playful

Turn sorting, counting and pattern-making into games. Children are more likely to stay interested when activities feel enjoyable rather than like a test.

Repeat concepts naturally

Children often need to explore the same idea several times before they understand it confidently. Revisit counting and sorting in different situations.

Avoid comparing children

Some children recognise number symbols early, while others understand quantities more easily through objects. Development varies, and progress matters more than comparison.

Celebrate effort and curiosity

Encourage children when they try counting, notice a pattern or solve a small problem. Mistakes are opportunities to explore and learn.

At Krazy Tots International Preschool, early learning provides opportunities for children to explore mathematical ideas through age-appropriate activities, classroom routines and hands-on experiences.

From Nursery to LKG and UKG, children can gradually become familiar with number recognition, counting, shapes, patterns, comparisons and simple number relationships.

Activities using blocks, picture cards, sorting materials, stories and everyday objects can help children connect abstract ideas with things they can see and handle.

Teachers can also adapt activities to suit children’s individual abilities. Some children may be ready to recognise written numbers, while others may benefit from additional opportunities to count objects or compare groups.

A balanced early learning environment combines guided learning with play, creative activities, movement and social interaction. This helps children build confidence in exploring new ideas without unnecessary pressure to master formal calculations too early.

The aim is to help children develop a positive relationship with maths and become comfortable asking questions, noticing patterns and trying different ways to solve problems.

HELP YOUR CHILD BUILD A STRONG MATHS FOUNDATION

Little Discoveries Today, Confident Learning Tomorrow

Children do not need to solve addition problems to begin learning maths. Every object they count, every shape they recognise and every pattern they discover gives them an opportunity to develop early mathematical thinking.
By bringing counting, comparing and sorting into everyday play, parents can help children understand that maths is not just something found in books. It is part of the world around them.
